Getting started

1. Get the game

Buy Quake III Arena on Steam or GOG. You need the original game files even though you will run a different engine on top of them.

2. Install ioquake3

Download ioquake3 — a modernised, actively maintained engine for the same game — and copy pak0.pk3 from your Quake III install into its baseq3 folder. The guide covers Windows, macOS and Linux.
